I agree Josh. I think this applies whether you are following Christ or serving in ministry in any capacity. I heard someone say recently "if you bleed with me, you can lead with me." The idea is that we should listen most to those who are in the trenches with us (co-laborers) and actively working to advance the cause of Christ. Something else I also heard in relation to this is that we should ask two questions about the person bringing the criticism: 1. Do I know they truly love and care about me?; and 2. Do they love the Church? BOTH must be true otherwise you are very likely dealing with someone who is just looking to chunk some stones at you. I agree that we have to be careful not to assume that those who disagree with us are out to get us. If they love you and the church, they are most definitely worth listening to. Thanks for your thoughts!

Great post! Volunteering in ministry can feel just like this too. I would add (based on personal experience - a long time ago, in a galaxy [city] far, far away) that we should be careful not to automatically label someone an "attacker" just because they disagree with us. Take a moment to do an objective assessment of the person before automatically assuming that they are just out to get you. I have been a victim of this mentality in the past, and it makes me re-evaluate the way I handle those with a difference of opinion.
